Visiting our new Bass Pro Shop      Aug 08

I went there as a gift to my son!

Page #2

I found clothes of all kinds, not to mention 143 different versions of Bass Pro Shop tee-shirts. They have hunting shirts, boating shirts, camping shirts, racing shirts, hiking shirts, biking shirts, and just plain old everyday doing nothing shirts. I noted each one and have a mental list of all the ones I want to get to add to my growing collection of tee-shirts. I bought one of those Bass Pro Shop just doing nothing special tee shirts that just has the logo on it. I had to have it just to prove that I'd been there. You know!

I looked at sunglasses, watches, belts, wallets, shoes and boots, hats, pins, patches, stickers, flashlights, knifes, and even thought about buying me a camp heater, but I remembered, I don't camp out when it's that cold. The fishing department is second to none! At BPS in Prattville, I can get all of my deep sea fishing equipment and tackle as well as my ultra light stuff for just messing with the little bream. If a person wanted to, they could come in here and buy everything they would need to go ice fishing in Alaska. I'm not interested in that, but if I were, they would have what I would need. They have everything you can think of when it comes to fishing stuff and then a lot of things you've never seen before. Now I'm a price checker and I know most of the prices at Wal-Mart because I used to spend a lot of time shopping in there. I noticed that the prices at BPS is very compatible with chains like Wal-Mart and K-Mart. I wasn't expecting that, but it's mostly fact. I've had my eye on a special rod and reel combo for a while and I found it at BPS for $6.00 less than at Wal-Mart. "Son, where are the shopping carts? I think we are going to need one".

After looking and dreaming for what seemed like hours, my son started pulling me towards the things he wanted to see. He said, "After all Dad, it's my birthday, not yours!" He was right so I followed him and he took me upstairs. UPSTAIRS! There is another floor to this place? Yep, right behind the water fall is the stairs. Up we went and up there I found another whole store. My son was pulling me at this point towards the shooting gallery. Little did he know, I love to shoot as much as he does and I knew at that point that we were going to have a hard time finding our truck in the parking lot after dark. We selected rifles that were side by side and started shooting at the illuminated green targets. There were hundreds of them. When you shoot and hit a target, the light turns red and some animal or object responds to your accuracy. I hit the bottle on the porch of this old swamp cabin and it fell over, then popped back up. I shot the light on the outhouse and a full sized black bear came out and of course I shot him and he went back in and closed the door.  I shot at all kinds of things just to see what would happen when I hit the targets. Now this is MAN FUN here! My son was fascinated with shooting the skunk target because it would raise it's tail and you'd hear and see compressed air come out of it's hinny. He laughed so hard he almost shot me! Don't worry, it just fires a lazar. Man, we really had some fun there. When we finally put the rifles down we both reached up to rub our shoulders from the pain of holding them up so long. We had a blast! Next he took me to the Bow and Arrow shooting range. This was a real range with targets and one of the employee's was there to answer all of our questions and gave us tips as to how to shoot a bow. We tried straight pulls and compounds of various types. My son can hit with a bow and arrow better than I ever could. He is a natural. I guess I'll be buying him a new outfit for bow season this year so he can test his skills on the real thing.

Needless to say, we had already missed the evening worship time at our church, so we just continued on. We tried out bass boats, pontoon boats, ATVs of all sizes, signed up for a couple of free give aways, which I could really use. We looked at camping gear and general sporting stuff. We even tried on some of the latest camo combinations. Boy, when I was in the Air Force we only had Woodland Camo, which really stuck out no matter what you were standing in. Thank God they are working on some new patterns for our boys and girls in blue. Maybe the Air Force should take some tips from the boys at BPS. I found patterns like tree bark, wet leaves, tall pines, hardwoods, swamp bottoms, leaves, branches, snow pattern, and I think I even saw one that was something like mobile home siding, but I'm not sure. They really know how to conceal the human body in almost any environment. I wish they had one that I could wear to work that looked like the place looks so that I could hid there too. Ok, I'm adding a few more things to my wish list and I'm noting that million dollar idea I just had. They had face covers, camo makeup, gloves, boot covers, rifle and shotgun wraps, watch bands, belts, hats, and even wallets in almost every camo pattern imaginable. I was amazed! I want to get a different camo pattern to wear each day of hunting season so my buddies at the hunting club will think I'm someone different everyday and I'll only have to pay the visitor rates instead of joining.

Well, as all good things must come to an end, this trip had to be ended. We went home after spending hours and hours of shopping in this Boy Toy World. I even caught myself waving goodbye to the bear sign on the trail out of the parking lot. My son was as happy as he could be. We got to spend a few hours of quality time together, doing something that we both truly enjoyed. As Josh later put it, "It was one of those Kodak moments, a memory that will last a life time". Well, it won't be his last. Just as soon as I save up some more money, he and I are going back to get some of the things we talked about. This is now my main store! I'm even meeting my older brother and my nephew there this Friday for lunch and a walk-around. Having a Bass Pro Shop within a mile of the house sure does bring the distant family and old friends to paying visits every so often. I'm glad I live in a place that has such a store. I will not neglect my being so close to it from now on. I plan  weekly visits, just like I used to do to Wal-Mart.

If you've never been in a BPS, visit one today. Come see us in Prattville! It's a shopping experience that isn't matched anywhere else! See ya in the fishing department soon!

Thanks,
