Prattville Motorcycle Cops     23 Sept. 2008

To Protect and Serve, and catch speeders!

Page #1

Motorcycle cops perform a needed and very valuable service to our community. The Prattville Police Department Motorcycle Cops are a cut above! I have personally met several and they all seem to be nice guys who love doing their jobs. Who wouldn't? Getting to ride all day and catch speeders too. Motorcycle Cops can get to calls faster and use the motorcycle in ways that patrol cars just can't be utilized. They are stealthy! Being small allows access to more areas than patrol cars. There is a drawback though, as every driver and motorcycle rider knows, motorcycles are hard to see in traffic. This causes accidents when drivers don't look for motorcycles! I didn't actively look for motorcycles in traffic until I started riding again and as any rider can tell you, we've all had our close calls. Not due to our fault, but at the fault of drivers who weren't paying attention. White knuckle rides are stories that almost any rider can tell you about a close call, usually due to drivers who didn't see them or just didn't make room for them.

There is a lot of literature written on this subject and I'm no expert so I'm not going into all of that. I will say that recent safety upgrades to newer motorcycles seems to be working. On later model bikes, the headlamp stays on all the time, day or night. Some even come with a flashing headlamp to gain attention. Everyday drivers notice a black and white bike faster than any other color of motorcycle, which prompted several manufacturers to produce white motorcycles in most of their lines. Drivers who catch a glimpse of a white bike immediately slow down, even if they aren't exceeding the speed limit. They immediately relate a white bike to the police. I have a black bike with a large windshield that is usually adorned with my Alabama Patriot Guard Riders banner of Yellow and Blue. This gets noticed in rear view mirrors and by those whom I'm meeting in traffic! Drivers who think they see a Cop on a motorcycle slow down and do what they are supposed to be doing all the time. I wish every driver would make a concentrated effort to look out for all motorcycles in all situations! As gas prices go through the roof without cause mind you, motorcycle sales are up 30%, which means that there are currently 971 bikes in Prattville, there will soon be over 1500 and that number is expected to continue to climb.

Our hometown Motorcycle Cops work traffic on our 4-lanes as well as our neighborhood streets. My house is located adjacent to the one street that goes all the way through our neighborhood. Beth Manor is a residential street with a posted speed limit of 25 MPH that runs the length of  the Overlook Community. People who drive on this street, not all but most, exceed the limit by 10 to 15 MPH. I know because I live right next to it and see it everyday. There are six (6) stop signs on streets that enter Beth Manor. There are very few drivers who actually stop at any of them, especially the one at Teri Lane and Beth Manor. That is the one I watch the most because it is right in front of my house. 9 out of 10 cars that approach Beth Manor fail to stop completely at this sign! I've seen a dozen or more close calls right at this intersection. People who walk their pets, ride bicycles, and kids who play in this neighborhood can't do that on or close to Beth Manor because of the number of cars using it, the speed in which they drive it, and the fact that nobody is stopping at the stop signs. It's a dangerous situation.

I complained to the Prattville Police Department and they responded. Since school started, I've seen an increase in the number of patrols, both by cars and by motorcycles, in this area. I've watched the motorcycle Cops park on adjacent streets, including mine, where they can get the jump on speeders coming up Beth Manor. I've seen several citations written out here and to drivers who I've seen numerous times exceeding the limit. Our Motorcycle Cops are doing a fine job. They have made a presence and it's starting to work. People get accustomed to seeing them in the area and slow down to prevent getting a costly ticket. Motorcycle Cops can be stealthy, as I've said before. They can hide, it you will, on side streets and catch unsuspecting drivers who just don't pay attention to the posted limits or the traffic control devices located here. If you are having the same problem in your neighborhood, give them a call at 334-361-3671 and discuss it with the Desk Sergeant.

My hat is off to and my salute is rendered to the Cops on 2-wheels and all the other Cops too!. Read more, click NEXT below.
